    Why this happens

    1. When you copy more than one column out of Excel, Excel puts an invisible tab between each cell. A tab is not part of the standard SMS alphabet, so one tab drags the whole message into Unicode and cuts your limit from 160 characters a part down to 70.
    2. Pasting into Notepad does not help. Notepad keeps the tabs, it just shows them as gaps.
    3. Curly apostrophes (’), long dashes (–) and the single-character ellipsis (…) do the same thing. Excel creates them automatically as you type.
    4. Emoji always force Unicode and cannot be swapped for anything. This page will tell you if it finds one.
    5. To stop Excel making curly apostrophes: File › Options › Proofing › AutoCorrect Options › AutoFormat As You Type, then untick Straight quotes with smart quotes.
